Natural and Organic Baby Clothes

In recent years the interest in all things organic and natural has grown consistently, however it's not just food that people are interested in.  Parents both old and new are more than just a little interested in the origins of the clothes they put on their precious baby, after all your baby's skin is a living breathing organ, shouldn't we know what we are touching it with.

Many people, and probably a lot of people who read this will wonder what organic baby clothes are all about, what is the point of them and what is wrong with the good old cotton or man made materials that are used for mass produced babywear.

Firstly organic babywear is really all about protecting your child from possible sources of contamination, you breast feed for the same reason and if not breast feeding you inspect the ingredients of any baby food you buy to make sure all the ingredients are natural.  Organic baby clothing is an extension of the same mindset, if you take a moment to think about how your babies clothes are manufactured and where they come from you will see that there is more value to this organic idea than it first appears.  For instance The pesticides used on cotton grown in the united states have generally been classified as toxic or are known carcinogens, the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) in the USA has classified several of these as dangerous (I believe it is currently 7).  Now i know we wash the clothes and the concentration is pretty low but I for one am shocked at this and knowing i have a choice about how my clothes are produced makes me certain I will choose the natural alternative.

Several chemical are also used in finishing both cotton and man made fibres, not least Formaldehyde which is a known toxin, once again, repeated washing cannot guarantee no contamination.  As for the quantities of chemicals used it has been suggested that the average cotton shirt contains about 40 grams of pesticides when new,  doesn't sound a lot but that is a third of a pound!.  Synthetic materials do not fare a lot better in the chmical stakes as you can imagine without my help.

The risks of any contamination from cotton baby clothes or man made material baby clothing is extremely small and I know of no proven cases of such contamination, however, as organically produced baby clothes are so much more readily available and at prices matching their mass produced counterparts why would you want to take the chance.  You can easily find a load of natural organic baby clothes at places like eBay and other specialist stores all over the web.  Some mainstream babywear stores are now also stocking a range of organic babywear, you should fully expect to see more and more appear in your high street and online, remember you heard it here first.
